Which PayPal fee applies

It depends on how the money is sent. For a US seller receiving US dollars, PayPal's own business fee page lists:

  • Goods and services: 2.99%
  • PayPal Checkout on a website: 3.49% + $0.49
  • Scanning a PayPal QR code: 2.29% + $0.09
  • Friends and family from a balance or bank: free
  • Friends and family by card: 2.90% + $0.30, paid by the sender

Who pays it

On goods and services, Checkout and QR code payments, the fee comes out of what the seller receives. On a friends and family payment funded by a card, the sender pays it on top.

Use “I want to get” in the calculator to see what to charge so that, after the fee, the amount you wanted is what lands.

Moving money from PayPal to your bank with a standard transfer is free. An instant transfer from a personal account costs 1.75%, at least $0.25 and at most $25. From a business account it is 1.50%, at least $0.50.
