How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?

On the Basic plan, Shopify keeps $3.20 of a $100 online card sale, before the monthly fee. The full breakdown by plan, and what changes the number.

On Shopify's Basic plan, a $100 online sale paid by card costs $3.20 in fees, so you keep $96.80, before the monthly plan, apps and shipping. Here is how that changes by plan and payment type. Rates are from Shopify's US pricing page, checked in October 2026.

The fee on a $100 sale, by plan

PlanMonthly priceOnline card rateFee on $100You keep
Basic$39 ($29 if paid yearly)2.9% + 30¢$3.20$96.80
Grow$105 ($79 yearly)2.7% + 30¢$3.00$97.00
Advanced$399 ($299 yearly)2.5% + 30¢$2.80$97.20
PlusFrom $2,3002.25% + 30¢$2.55$97.45

For a sale in person, with Shopify's card reader, the Basic rate is 2.6% + 10¢, so $2.70 on a $100 sale.

The extra fee if you do not use Shopify Payments

If you take cards through another payment company instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top of what that company charges:

PlanExtra Shopify feeOn $100
Basic2%$2.00
Grow1%$1.00
Advanced0.6%$0.60
Plus0.2%$0.20

So on Basic, with a payment company that charges 2.9% + 30¢, a $100 sale costs $5.20: $3.20 to the payment company and $2.00 to Shopify.

Don't forget the monthly fee

The card fee is only part of it. The plan costs money whether you sell or not, and on a small shop it adds a lot per sale.

On Basic at $39 a month:

Sales of $100 a monthPlan cost per saleCard feeTotal per $100 sale
5$7.80$3.20$11.00
10$3.90$3.20$7.10
40$0.98$3.20$4.18

Paid themes and apps add more on top. Many stores use a few paid apps for reviews, upsells or email, each with its own monthly price.

Is Shopify still worth it in 2026?

For a store with a large catalog, steady sales and plans to grow, yes. Shopify's checkout, apps and inventory tools are hard to beat, and the monthly fee is a small share of the revenue.

For a small seller with a handful of products, selling mostly through Instagram, TikTok or word of mouth, the monthly fee can cost more than the card fees. That is the seller who should look at cheaper options.

What a $100 sale costs elsewhere

If your customers already use payment apps, you can skip card fees on many sales altogether. Rates below are each company's own published rates, checked in October 2026.

How the customer paysFee on $100
Zelle$0 (your bank may set its own fee)
Cash App, to a personal account$0
Cash App, to a business account$2.75 (2.6% + 15¢)
Venmo business profile$2.00 (1.9% + 10¢)
PayPal goods and services$2.99 (2.99%)

The catch is that a payment app on its own does not take orders. You end up matching screenshots to DMs. That is what a storefront page fixes.

Utilica gives you a storefront page you put in your bio. Customers pick what they want, the page adds up the total, and Cash App, Venmo, PayPal or Zelle opens with the exact amount filled in. Every order gets a number and lands in your Orders list.

  • No monthly fee on the free plan, which includes one page with 5 products.
  • No fee from Utilica on Cash App, Venmo, PayPal or Zelle payments, on any plan.
  • Cards are optional. Card payments cost Stripe's fee (2.9% + 30¢ in the US) plus 3% on the free plan, 1% on Pro ($7.99 a month) or nothing on Business ($18.99 a month).

To be clear about the trade: on the free plan, a $100 card sale costs more than on Shopify Basic ($6.20 against $3.20), because there is no monthly fee to cover. If most of your sales are by card and you sell a lot, a paid plan, or Shopify, can work out cheaper. If most customers pay in an app, you pay nothing to us at all.
